Joan Court (1919-2016)

The veteran animal and human rights activist Joan Court passed away in December 2016, aged 97. Joan Court was one of three Cambridge ‘granarchists’ who initiated what became a national campaign of opposition to Cambridge University’s plans for a massive new research facility that would have specialised in invasive neurological experiments on monkeys. The university abandoned the project in 2004, and Joan later took part in protests against the animal research facility being built for Oxford University, sadly without the same successful outcome. The picture below shows Joan (seated) on one of her hunger strikes in Oxford. The lady with the shopping trolley is the late June Whitehouse, a former chairperson of OxVeg, whose daughter Anne Orgee kindly sent us the picture.
