General Election question

At the hustings for the Wantage constituency held in Old Mill Hall, Grove, on Wednesday 29th April I asked the five candidates the following question:

If elected, and given the choice, would you vote to extend the pilot cull of badgers in Somerset and Gloucestershire to other parts of the country, or replace the cull with a programme of vaccination, increased levels of testing in cattle and improved biosecurity in order to control the spread of bovine TB?

In response, the Conservative and UKIP candidates supported extending the badger cull to the whole of England, the Tory also taking the opportunity to say that he would vote to repeal the Hunting Act, paving the way for the resumption of fox hunting. In contrast, the candidates for the Green, Labour and Liberal Democrat parties each supported abandoning the cull. Although there will be some exceptions in other constituencies, the views expressed by the candidates on this important animal welfare issue are likely to be mirrored by others in their respective parties.
