Vegan Life magazine

Vegan Life is a new magazine that will be published every two months. The first issue (Sept/Oct 2014) is out now, cover price £3-95. Subscriptions cost £14-50 for one year (6 issues) a saving of more than £9 on the cost of buying each issue separately. Vegan Life is also available via a digital subscription for £9-99 (details at veganlifemag.co.uk/category/preview).

A new magazine dedicated to all aspects of veganism is something to be celebrated, and the first issue has several good articles, reports on new products, and interesting recipes with appealing photos (e.g. Raw Apple Walnut Cake). There’s a neat piece (“Talking Point”) on the question of vegans eating eggs from rescued hens, with a concise “for” and “against”. This definitely sets Vegan Life apart, and represents an edgier stance than competitive publications like Vegetarian Living. However, the potential audience for a purely vegan magazine is likely to be more restricted than for vegetarian titles.

Print magazines are currently having a difficult time with falling sales, and any new title will struggle to establish itself in a tough market place. So the launch of Vegan Life is definitely risky and I wish it well. One of the bigger problems with all these lifestyle magazines is that they can become slightly repetitive. Therefore it’s better than this will only have six issues per year, rather than twelve. I would like to see more up-to-the-minute reports on breaking news items, with a ‘no holds barred’ approach to ongoing issues like the badger cull. You know, the sort of incisive critique that readers of the OxVeg blog are familiar with.
